The business education history of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SUFE) can be traced back to 1917 when a commerce program was established at the Nanjing Higher Normal School. YANG Xingfo, the well-known social activist, and patriotic democratic personage, was the program director. In 1921, the program was transferred east to Shanghai and became the Shanghai University of Commerce. This university was the first commerce university in China’s education history. GUO Bingwen, the renowned educator, was the first chancellor. MA Yinchu, the famous economist, became the first director of academic affairs. As China's first higher education institution of business studies, SUFE suggested since it was established "to train and develop those talents who have guidance and organizational capabilities and can take the lead in industry and commerce." Adhering to this tradition and spirit, SUFE’s several generations of excellent educators have been committing themselves to business research, exploring the truth and contributing to the society with their research and education achievements by forming a close partnership with the society. After several generations of business educators’ unremitting efforts, SUFE has become a multi-disciplinary university which focuses on applied economics and management science and maintains a coordinated development of finance, economics, management, law, and science.
